In 2024, I put myself first!   I hadn’t done this in quite some time.

I took time to evaluate my personal and career priorities and realized that I was ready to embark on a dream I have had for a while, becoming a business owner.  The process of putting myself first, letting go of things that no longer served me, and focusing on my own professional growth was hard, but also VERY empowering!

I worked with a coach who helped me envision my new business, and by summer my coaching business was launched.  I began thinking about and engaging in work that I love most…women’s leadership.

This process wasn’t easy as I typically focus on the needs of others both professionally and at home.   I experienced feelings of discomfort and occasional guilt.  Questions swirled in my head…What if I fail?  Do I have enough credentials to be a coach? Will my family think I’m crazy?  But I powered through, as deep down I knew it was my time, and my happiness and fulfillment were most important.

I believe many women leaders prioritize the needs of others before their own.  It’s how women are socialized.  We are expected to be the caregivers, the nurturers, the supportive and empathetic leaders.   Additionally, not enough attention and resources are given to encouraging women leaders to focus on themselves and their own professional development. It can lead to dissatisfaction, frustration, and eventual burnout!

This is especially true in the non-profit world.  The needs of mission-driven programming, staff, as well as donors and other stakeholders all come first.  It’s the nature of non-profit work and one of the reasons many women are attracted to these leadership roles because it’s all about helping others and the community you serve.

That’s one of the major reasons I launched my coaching business, AchieveHer Leadership LLC.  I wanted to create a supportive space for women to unapologetically focus on themselves, their leadership successes and struggles, and envision what achieving their fullest potential could look like.
